Ahhh…the tragic comedy that is abortion continues. Government stats for abortion in Canada, for 2007 and 2008 have been released this past week. Only 44,416 abortions were reported in Canada for 2008…down extensively from the 91,377 abortions reported for 2006.
Even those stats are low. The Canadian Institute for Health Information, given the task of reporting abortion stats, can’t even get them for abortion clinics in Canada.
These clinics are private clinics, in a nation that heaps disdain on any other private medical clinic that dares opens its doors. Abortion however….it’s almost like their attitude is “abortion….we do abortions here? Surely not!”
At least according to the statistics that are available.
Would we tolerate such censorship on any other medical procedure? What do you think?
So what can be said? What is to be done? All I can think of at this time is that great quote from Dagg v Canada (Minister of Finance)
‘‘the overarching purpose of access to information Legislation is to facilitate democracy. It helps to ensure first, that citizens have the information required to participate meaningfully in the democratic process, and secondly, that politicians and bureaucrats remain accountable to the citizenry.’’
Is there anyone in Canada willing to be accountable on this issue anymore?
