Well, it’s out. The Special Committee to Review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act has released their final report, listing 35 recommendations. The report is available here.
None of recommendations deal with Section 22:1 of The Act, which bans the release of any abortion-related information other than raw, general statistics.
Why the committee chose to ignore our submission, well, we can speculate forever.
The point is, regardless of how the committee feels, it is still wrong for a government to censor information from citizens. Period.
It is important to remind government, every now and then, that we do indeed live in a democracy, not some Soviet Bloc country that mocks the democratic values it swears it upholds.
Battle over? Nope. There are still some irons in the fire…and the appearance and submissions were meant to be one facet of this project.
